My Teaching Philosophy

In the past few years teaching at four different institutions, I’ve had cause to notice that many students, regardless of what institution they attend, are very intimidated by the idea of English classes. Often they feel inadequate to the task of writing college papers and since they feel that they lack the skill, they don’t wish to even try. Because of this frequent fear, my teaching philosophy centers on creating an environment where English is approachable. Students need to understand that writing is a process, not a product, and that by approaching it step-by-step, they can learn to not be intimidated by it.

Why I am at NU

I teach at Northwood University because I enjoy the small, intimate settings. Northwood is very much a community, and that feeling translates into the classroom. The majority of students know each other and this can promote a deeper connection during discussion or instruction, as they can relate to each other and to other classes they’ve attended. The small class sizes also allow for more in depth discussion that isn’t always possible in large lecture halls.
